The ASME B16.5 is a standard which envelopes guidelines used to manufacture flanges such as Carbon Steel Long Weld Neck Flanges and Flanged Fittings for use in a piping system. Usually, these flanges are available in markets in the size range between NPS 1/2 through NPS 24 Metric/Inch. The guidelines covered by the ASME B16.5 standard include pressure-temperature ratings, materials used to make the flanges, dimensions, tolerances, testing, marking, and methods of designating openings for stainless steel long weld neck flanges. A long weld neck flange is similar to a weld neck flange. The difference between them is that the neck or a tapered hub in a long weld neck flange is extended. Thus acting like a boring extension.

Just like weld neck flanges, the RTJ long weld neck flange is typically used in applications that involve high pressure as well as high or low temperatures conditions. These applications require an unrestricted flow of the media, which is usually fluid conveyed by the piping system for instance vessels, columns or barrels. The bore of a Long Weld Neck Flange is designed in such a manner that it matches the bore of the pipe. The tapered hub of the Raised face long weld neck flange is what permits for an even distribution of mechanical stress or pressure between the pipe and the flange. The tapered hub of a long weld neck flange is what facilitates the execution of radiographic inspections, which are conducted in order to detect possible leakages and welding defects in a piping system. ANSI B16.5 Long Weld Neck Flanges are connected to a piping system with a single full penetration V-shaped butt weld.
