Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings produced under standard ANSI b16.5 are manufactured in accordance to several parameters such as materials, dimensions, marking, pressure-temperature ratings, tolerances, testing, and methods of designating openings for pipe flanges and flanged fittings. This being said, it is important to note the limitations of the ANSI b16.5, which takes into account cast or forged materials. Moreover, the standard also includes other details such as requirements and recommendations in terms of the bolting used, flange gaskets, and flange joints. The ANSI b16.5 stainless steel Loose Flange is usually produced with the size ranging between NPS 1/2 through NPS 24 Metric/Inch. A loose flange, or as referred to as a lap joint flange is a two-piece component. The first piece is known as a stub end and the second piece is referred to as a backing flange. Speaking about the first piece or the stub end, which is a sleeve and is shaped similar to a short piece of pipe. This flange has a narrow shoulder on one end, with the other end or the hub that has been butt welded. The dimensions of the narrow shoulder are like the raised face of the flange, whereas the butt weld end of the stub-end is similar to the neck of a weld neck flange, down to the diameter and thickness. The back face of the hub of the loose flange is produced with a rounded transition that attaches the hub to the sleeve.

The other piece of a DIN Loose Flange is the backing flange, whose dimensions are equal to the other common flanges. However, this kind of flange does not have a raised face, unlike the stub end piece which has a raised face. On one side of the Loose round flange, the backside is constructed with a slight shoulder which is square cut at the centre or pipe hole. On the other hand, the front side has a flat face with a centre hole and an outside fillet to align the fillet of the Stub-end piece of this flange. The flange part of the ANSI b16.5 Loose flange is assembled by having it slipped on to the stub-end piece before the sleeve being welded to the pipe or fitting to form a connection. The carbon steel loose flange itself is neither welded nor is it fixed in any way. Thus gaining the ability to freely to move around for proper alignment with whatever part it has been attached to. These flanges look similar to both a weld neck flange and a loose slip-on flange because the component has been butt welded with the pipes.
