The ASTM A182 specification envelopes several stainless steel components including forged fittings, such as Duplex steel forged fittings intended to be used for high temperature service. After hot working, the forged 2205 stainless steel fittings need to be cooled to a specific temperature. The specification details the heat treatment to be performed on the 2205 Duplex steel fittings in accordance with certain requirements. These requirements include the kind of heat treatment used, the austenitizing /solution temperature of the performance, cooling media, in addition to quenching. Alloy UNS S32205 is a duplex stainless steel grade with a mixed ferrite and austenite microstructure. In an annealed condition, this duplex alloy consists of about 40 – 50% ferrite. The dual microstructure of this particular alloy would imply that the fasteners produced from this metal would retain the high strength properties of the ferritic grades whilst inheriting the corrosion resistance properties of the austenitic grades. It is not uncommon to see the A182 f51 duplex stainless steel elbow used as an effective solution to chloride ion stress related corrosion cracking, which is the Achilles’ heel of conventional stainless steel alloys such as grade 304. In comparison to stainless steel grade 317L, the fittings made from UNS S32205 has superior resistance to chloride pitting as well as to crevice corrosion. These Duplex Steel 2205 Forged Fittings exhibit outstanding corrosion resistance to seawater in addition to different concentrations of sulphuric acid. Moreover, these UNS S32205 duplex stainless steel fittings are also resistant to sulphide stress related corrosion cracking, which are noticed in sour-gas environments. The high performance of UNS S32205 fittings has been attributed to the presence of a high level of chromium as well as nitrogen and molybdenum.
