In solutions that contain halogens such as chloride and bromide, conventionally used austenitic stainless steels are readily attacked by local corrosion in the form of either pitting, crevice corrosion or stress related corrosion cracking. The presence of the aforementioned halogens in acidic environments also accelerates the rate of general corrosion in the more traditionally used grade 304 & alloy 316, thus making them susceptible to stress corrosion cracking in chloride ion containing solutions; especially when the alloy has been exposed to a temperature exceeding 60°C. In general, any increase noted in the contents of elements nickel and molybdenum in austenitic steel grades, improve the corresponding alloy’s resistance to SCC.

Since the SMO 254 Forged Fittings contains both nickel and molybdenum in their alloy, the resistance to corrosion is an important characteristic. Moreover, the addition of nitrogen in the alloy of SMO DIN 1.4547 Coupling also improves its resistance to pitting, while aiding in the substantial increase in its yield strength. Speaking of its resistance to pitting, the PREN value or Pitting Resistance Equivalent number of UNS S31254 Union can be as high as 44, thus proving to be of importance to the marine industry. Both the SMO 254 alloy Threaded Coupling as well as threaded fittings prove to be useful in applications where the diameter of the bore is about 2 NPS or smaller. In addition to the improved corrosion resistance property and the enhanced yield strength, the 254 SMO Threaded Elbow is much tougher, which is indicative of long service life.
